History Hill,Gold Rush Museum

History Hill is a comprehensive goldfield museum. Our belief was that if it was on the land of a goldfield during the time of a gold rush then it was part of the big picture. It's not just gold pans picks and shovels. It is everything people had and did during the time of a gold rush. History Hill contains over 10,000 artefacts from 1850's to 1900 that confirm the history surrounding a gold town population. As a result of 50 years compulsive obsessive research there are 2 books on offer which represent a commitment to getting the story right. Both books hole in total approximately 200,000 word to tell the full story in regards gold and gold history. Both books are available from the website as either PDF downloads or hard copy publications.
The History Hill Museum is open to the public every weekend, public holidays from 10 to 4 or by appointment. The collection holds all manner of lifestyle akin to a gold seeker and to round off the experience there is the underground mine. 175 metres of underground excavation to explore as though you were in the gold rush. The Son of Hope gold mine is a purpose built construction that was dug the old way to ensure its authenticity with history. The excavation took 3 years to complete from 1994 to 1997. Although the Son of Hope mine is a re-creation it embodies all the character and atmosphere from the 1800's gold time with electric light and constant safety inspections. History Hill is privately owned an locate 2 kilometres east of Hill End on the Sofala/Bathurst Road.
The most common comment we get is 'Never realised it was this big'. Walking for half a kilometre looking to one side in a look there is over half a kilometre of displays to cover the full gamut of a gold rush. History Hill has easy vehicular access off the Hill End Road with a straight driveway to a large parking area. Full comfort stop amenities complemented by a native vegetation area, aviary, pond, and picnic area. Most visitors say they will be back and most take about an hour to look through, although have had the odd one take 6 hours to return the next day as they didn't see everything (no extra charge).
Hill End's claim to fame was the unearthing of the world's largest single mass of gold Correctly called 'The Beyers and Holtermann Specimen'. This 3,000 ounce lump of gold was found in 1872 and created the fuss that imortalised the name Hill End. The History Hill museum contain the tip off this mass which was purchased from Harry Holtermann along with other personal belonging from the famed Bernard Otto Holtermann.
Full comprehensive and multiple, blacksmith, stables, Chinese, kitchen, building, technology, hotel... the list goes on and on at History hill Museum, Hill End.
