Andromeda Botanic Gardens

Andromeda Botanic Gardens is an amazing, historic, Barbados National Trust garden with an unparalleled collection of plants. It is the only botanic garden in Barbados with historical and cultural significance. Accessible by bus or car, it is located on the picturesque east coast. The Andromeda Gallery Lounge and Garden Café help to complete a ‘fantastic experience’. ‘One of the most special gardens in the world – wonderful!’

Andromeda Gardens was established by the renowned Iris Bannochie as a private family garden. Ms Bannochie was the most influential gardener from the region and her accolades include three gold medals at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show; RHS Veitch medal; and the Silver Crown of Merit awarded by the Barbadian government. Previously farmland, Mrs Bannochie created a unique garden with many trees, palms and other plants collected from her travels across the globe. She bequeathed the garden to the Barbados National Trust in 1988. The variety of plants in this historic garden is unparalleled and simply wonderful – a true horticultural delight.

Located near to Bathsheba Beach on the east coast of St Joseph, Andromeda is a ‘must-see’ tourist attraction. There is so much to see and experience as one wanders through the space. Many people visit the Gardens as a special trip, staying all day. Others visit as part of their east coast tour.

The management team at Andromeda is committed to protecting this wonderful eco-system that Iris Bannochie created. Only organic practices are used in the Gardens. Be patient and you will see birds such as hummingbirds; bananaquits with their yellow breasts; the endemic Barbados bullfinch; grey kingbirds and some majestic herons. Stay late and you’ll see our resident monkeys looking for food, playing or even fighting. Relax by the pond ‘one of the most tranquil spots in the world’ and watch the dragonflies. Feed the fish with your children – always a joy! For a family vacation on land, Andromeda is ideal. Children with paying parents are free and your adult ticket gives you and your family unlimited return visits to the gardens for 3 weeks. Excellent value! After feeding the fish, why not feed yourselves? The café offers simple, but well-executed food – Bajan fish-cakes, sandwiches with home-made bread, organically grown salads (when available) or just treat yourselves to a cup of coffee and a slice of cake.

Iris Bannochie was committed to horticultural training. A variety of courses is offered at Andromeda Botanic Gardens. The management team at Andromeda Botanic Gardens is committed to helping create a ‘Green Barbados’. The one day Let’s Get Growing Workshop is very popular and shows participants how to grow their own herbs and vegetables organically. Garden and planting design workshops are also available at Andromeda. Longer term education in amenity horticulture is also taught at Andromeda and, as a ‘green business’ the emphasis is on promoting organic and sustainable practices. It is a registered training and assessment centre for Caribbean/National Vocational Qualifications (CVQs/NVQs). Andromeda Botanic Gardens has a close working relationship with the University of the West Indies and the two organisations collaborate on some courses as well as the educational development of the Gardens.

Andromeda Botanic Gardens is simply a work of creative genius. Creativity extends to the recently opened Andromeda Gallery Lounge which provides an opportunity for local artists/craftspeople to display and sell their work. Mahogany sculptures, hand-made soaps and perfumes, bags, art and photography are all available at the Gallery Lounge.

So - great garden, cool café, creative crafts, life-long learning. Andromeda Botanic Gardens – an amazing garden and so much more!
