Established in 1620, Durty Nelly’s can truly be described as one of Ireland’s landmark pubs. Located in an idyllic setting nestled in the shadow of the magnificent Bunratty Castle Hotel and adjoining Folk Park overlooking the River Ratty and Clare Hills. Over the years we have resisted temptation of being converted into yet another Gastro Style pub. The building itself is steeped in History and Folklore and has a story attached to its name. The Legend of an Irish woman, known simply as Durty Nelly, a name that puzzled all who had the good fortune to be granted her welcome was the keeper of the toll bridge over the river Owengarney which flowed outside her window on its way to the Shannon and this was her livelihood. She was also the keeper of a little ‘shebeen’ which provided refreshment and comfort to many a weary traveller and that tradition is still alive and kicking to this very day. Perhaps, the biggest single charm of Nelly’s, as it is known locally, is the fact that it’s a meeting place for both locals and tourists alike, and the interaction between the two is what makes it such a unique Irish pub. You’ll typically find groups of overseas visitors and locals chatting away as if they were lifetime friends, swapping stories or asking after friends and relatives who’ve settled around the world or stayed at home in Ireland. Durty Nelly’s is also home to the world renowned Oyster Restaurant serving a wide variety of Irish Fare using the finest, freshest local produce. The famous Nelly’s blessing is hand painted on the exterior to greet everyone as they enter. In keeping with the spirit of a traditional pub, the interior is full of historical artefacts, lanterns, saw dusty floors and wooden beams with three original cozy snug areas, many a local can be found telling a story by the open turf fires during the cold winter months. The bars are full of atmosphere with music nightly. Irish traditional music is as much alive today as it was in the past with singalongs, the occasional impromptu Irish Dance from our customers and a sing song or two may arise at closing time. Along with all these characteristics, we also have a few characters working behind the bars serving popular Irish Craft Beers and a great pint of Guinness. The legendary Irish hospitality is evident as soon as you enter and you can be sure our customers will receive a warm friendly welcome, efficient service, a great pint of Guinness and maybe a story or two from our wonderful staff. In addition, we have recently renovated the Loft area of the pub in keeping with the traditional style throughout so we now have a facility to cater for all types of functions including weddings and with our outside seated terraced area, the stunning views of the surrounding countryside can be absorbed. A Gift shop is also on site selling a variety of quality Durty Nelly’s mementos.
