National Museum of the United States Navy

The National Museum of the United States Navy collects, preserves, displays, and interprets historic naval artifacts and artwork for the information, education, and inspiration of naval personnel and the general public. It was established in 1961 and opened to the public in 1963. As one of nine naval museums throughout the country, it is the only one to present a complete overview of U.S. naval history 1775 to the present. Permanent and temporary exhibitions commemorate the Navy’s wartime heroes and battles, as well as its peacetime contributions in exploration, diplomacy, navigation, and humanitarian service.

Located in the historic Washington Navy Yard, the Museum is housed in the former Breech Mechanism Shop of the old Naval Gun Factory. The 600-foot long building, constructed between 1887 and 1899 was one of a number of shops in the Yard where ordnance, missile components, and electronic equipment were produced.

The National Museum of the United States Navy has more than 5,000 artifacts in 40,000 square feet of exhibit space. Artifacts include weapons, ship models, uniforms, medals, and fine art. The museum has an active Public Programs schedule for adults and children. Special events and school programs are held throughout the year, including book signings, demonstrations, lectures, and exhibition openings. Curriculum-related programs and thematic tours are available for school groups grades 1-12. Guided highlights tours are available upon request for all visitors.

The National Museum of the United States Navy and Cold War Gallery are free and open to the public and is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on weekends and holidays; closed on New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving; Christmas Eve and Day.
