One Of A Kind

The ultimate way to explore rural New Zealand. In a self driven Rail Cart or on our Rail Bike, travel along a decommissioned railway line through tunnels and over bridges to townships that have faded into the past. The Stratford to Okahukura Rail line is 142km in length, has 98 bridges and a staggering 24 tunnels. Back to back these tunnels add up to 10km underground. Some tours also incorporate a trip via jet boat on the Whanganui River.

RailCarts are converted golf buggies designed to ride on the railway. RailBikes are a two person, four wheeled "bike". Participants sit side by side with their legs out in front on comfortable wide 'tractor' seats. Bikes have independent pedaling and gears.

There are several tour options to choose from.

Rail only

5 Tunnel, 20 Tunnel, The Ultimate and the Rail Republic Picnic. The 20 tunnel is considered the classic tour covering 80km of the 142km of line.

5 Tunnel
Experience the first 20km of the Forgotten World Railway.Enjoy a taste of the Forgotten World journey. Travel through 5 tunnels including the longest tunnel (1.5km) on the line before stopping for a cuppa and a home made slice or two, and returning on the rails to the starting point.

The 20 Tunnel experience will transport you back through history, and get you home in time for dinner. This is a full day and more than 80km of total immersion into the true stories and tall tales woven into this unique landscape.

The Ultimate
Unplugged yet still ‘on the line’ as you travel the entire 142km from Okahukura to Stratford or Stratford to Okahukura with an overnight stay (additional to tour) in Whangamomona. You’ll go through all 24 tunnels, cross all 98 bridges and see the remnants of the original settlements along the line. The history of this unique landscape will resonate as you absorb the stories and relive the memories of New Zealand’s pioneering past with this two-day journey back in time. The ultimate experience.

Rail and River

The Rail and River Run

The second day you'll be flying by helicopter into the heart of the Whanganui National Park, visiting the Bridge to Nowhere, then jet boating up the Whanganui River exploring historical sites and scenes on the longest commercial jet boat tour in the Southern Hemisphere back to your start point in Taumarunui. The Expedition is two full days and includes one nights accommodation.
