Café del Mar’s stunning new interior décor is not its only revolution. It is taking its cuisine to a new level as well, by introducing the sharing concept. That translates into a wide selection of small dishes, or tapas, that guests can share.
During Café del Mar’s soft opening, we got an impressive ‘pre-taste’ of what’s on offer. The selection included deliciously crisp fried cuttlefish with a home-made piri piri sauce; fresh octopus salad with onion, tomato and coriander; a chicken curry with vegetables and capers; incredibly tender prego no pão [steak on bread]; scrumptious hamburgers; herb salad with feta, walnuts and crisp bacon; and probably Angola’s best home-made apple tart.
Coconuts’ most popular mains and deserts will remain on the menu. Examples are the catch of the day, picanha, and Coconuts’ signature petit gateaux.
Herb garden and Champagne Lounge
A unique and lovely detail is that Café del Mar has its own herb garden. A more spectacular, equally unique new feature is Café del Mar’s champagne lounge, where clients can enjoy a variety of champagnes and other premium drinks comfortably on one of the couches. This cosy, highly romantic area is a like a little fairy tale forest overlooking the beach. The warm, playfully shaped lamps made of rope and other natural materials are reminiscent of wild mushrooms, the low tables of stones; the robust wooden décor of trees; patches of plants of a lush forest floor.
Pricing
Café del Mar aims to take full advantage of its ‘new kid on the block status,’ but definitely not to the detriment of its customers. “We’ll try to keep prices affordable despite the current economic crisis,” Mr Ribeiro said. “You need to sacrifice part of your profit to keep your loyal guests.”

Café del Mar is open every day, all year, except on Christmas day and New Year. On Saturdays, Café del Mar serves a traditional Angolan dish.
Food is served in all areas of the restaurant, including the beach.
