40 minutes outside of Freetown, Sierra Leone, Tacugama is set high in the hills of the Western Area Forest Reserve. The 100-acre sanctuary is 10 minutes past the historic mountain village of Regent. To come and see the chimpanzees at Tacugama, please reserve a place on one of our guided tours. There are two daily tours available: at 10:30am and 4:00pm, every day of the year.
Set in spectacular protected rainforest habitat, our eco-lodges are the perfect place to unwind and enjoy the tranquil setting amongst birds, butterflies and wild chimpanzees. We have four lodges - two traditional roundhouses and two at tree canopy level. The traditional roundhouses are named Bruno and Julie, after the first two chimpanzees ever rescued at Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary. Bruno has a double bed and Julie two single beds. Both roundhouses have an en suite bathroom and a veranda looking out into the rainforest. There are also hammocks between the lodges. Our first canopy lodge is named Augusta. The bedroom has a double bed and leads to a lovely balcony with a hammock and beautiful views. Downstairs are the kitchen, bathroom and bbq. Our second canopy lodge is named Christo. It is the biggest accommodation we have and can accommodate 4 people in two bedrooms, one with a double bed and one with two single beds. With a spacious living area, kitchen and balcony this lodge is suitable for longer stays at Tacugama. All prices include breakfast and a tour of the sanctuary. We provide bed linen, mosquito nets and towels. We have water, soft drinks, beer, wine and snacks for sale from our shop.
