OVERVIEW
Constitution Hill is a living museum that tells the story of South Africa’s journey to democracy. The site is a former prison and military fort that bears testament to South Africa’s turbulent past and, today, is home to the country’s Constitutional Court, which endorses the rights of all citizens.

There is perhaps no other site of incarceration in South Africa that imprisoned the sheer number of world-renowned men and women as those held within the walls of Constitution Hill’s Old Fort, Women's Jail and Number Four. Nelson Mandela. Mahatma Gandhi. Joe Slovo. Albertina Sisulu. Winnie Madikizela-Mandela. Fatima Meer. They all served time here. But the precinct also confined tens of thousands of ordinary people during its 100-year history: men and women of all races, creeds, ages and political agendas; children too; the everyman and the elite. In this way, the history of every South African lives here.

MUSEUMS
Constitution Hill enables us to memorialise the past, imagine the future, and understand our place in the present. It is not just a heritage site – or a museum in which heritage is housed – but a vantage point that grants a view across time and space.

Constitution Hill has a history dating to 1893, when the doors to the Old Fort first opened as a prison for white men and later, briefly, as a military fort. In the early 20thcentury, additional sections were added to the site, including a section for black male prisoners, known as Number Four, a Women's Jail and an Awaiting Trial Block. After South Africa become a democracy in 1994, the precinct was renamed Constitution Hill and a historic decision was taken to locate the Constitutional Court on the premises.

HOST YOUR EVENT AT CONSTITUTION HILL
There is perhaps no area in Johannesburg that offers the variety of venues as those offered by Constitution Hill. Ours is a precinct premised on unusual spaces, from small former cells where bars yet remain on the windows, to large open areas with the capacity to accommodate hundreds of people.
Of course, much of the space has been refurbished, making it welcoming for every type of corporate event, from private meetings to larger conferences, as well as private events, and from small, intimate dinners to large parties that are open to the public. We also house temporary and permanent exhibitions in the Old Fort, the Women's Jail and Number Four which are open to our visitors.
When it comes to conferencing, our venues can be perfectly configured to suit your purposes, whether you’re hosting a meeting, a seminar or talk, a cocktail reception or a banquet.
We have all the necessary equipment to make your experience seamless and professional, as well as catering services and secure underground parking for all delegates.
For more informal events, our spaces offer the opportunity to experience the very best of Constitution Hill. In particular, our outdoor venues are infused with all the energy and electricity that comes with being situated in the heart of a city as vibrant as Johannesburg, and offer spectacular views.

THE SCHOOL ON THE HILL
By forging links between the past, the present and the future, with a key focus on the values enshrined in the Constitution, Constitution Hill has the potential to become a site of social transformation for learners, educators and general visitors.
Through our educational programmes we aim to provide learners with an interactive, dynamic learning experience that makes the Constitution tangible, real and alive. It is our wish as an educational site to ensure that learners from across the country can benefit from our schools programme by encouraging educators and school stakeholders to view Constitution Hill as a crucial site of learning.
School tours are offered separately or part of a selected educational programme. During the tour learners engage with tangible heritage in the form of buildings and objects, and intangible heritage through the stories related to the site and universal heritage – the common concepts and values enshrined in the Constitution.
The schools programme is a structured education programme, ensuring that a visit to Constitution Hill is relevant and meaningful for both learners and educators. It has clear links with the Department of Education’s curriculum, and helps develop Constitution Hill as a crucial site of learning that meets cross-curriculum learning outcomes. Through the schools programme, Constitution Hill has been able to provide innovative and mission-based support material to teachers and schools.
The programme itself is an interactive two- or three-hour experience. Prior to coming to the site, learners are provided with activities to contextualise the site and familiarise them with its purpose. Once at Constitution Hill, learners are taken on a tour of the site by a trained education officer.
