The Food Fundi is an award-winning daytime coffee cafe, owned and operated by local chef Jason Powell and his partner, writer Melanie Reeder-Powell. The food is predominantly made from scratch, offering freshly baked low-GI bread and decadent confection, gourmet burgers with homemade seasonal pickles and relishes, nutritious bowl salads, wraps, sandwiches and all-day breakfasts (try the exquisite eggs Benedict or the Alternative breakfast with shavings of parmesan, chorizo, poached eggs and peppery rocket).
Seasonal ingredients are showcased from the region's abundant pantry, including macadamia nuts (used in smoothies, and a creamy nut mayonnaise), avocados, local trout, and fresh herbs and salad greens. Chicken is smoked on site using rooibos tea leaves, and a boutique wine list offers interesting estate varieties, and select craft beers, both bottled and on tap. There is also a delicious wine-by-the-glass offering - on-tap!
Great care is taken with the coffee-making process, from the quality of the water to the perfect froth, and smoothies and shakes use whole veggies, fruit, nuts, coconut milk and herbs.
The Food Fundi has been featured across South African media platforms from foodie magazines to lifestyle television. The business also offers a secondary catering service, under the banner Gourmet Gurus, with the capacity to travel across the country and to serve over 1 000 people. Clients have included Louis Vuitton, film productions, national and international corporate companies, and private bushveld weddings.
