Cango Wildlife Ranch is an accredited institution, this internationally recognised accreditation awarded by the Pan African Association of Zoos & Aquaria (PAAZA) has only been awarded to a handful of facilities in the whole of Africa, it is extremely prestigious and difficult to achieve and is reviewed every 4 years, having been awarded this accolade twice consecutively, we are currently busy with our third review.
This award also ensures that Cango complies with extremely stringent conditions regarding our animals and what happens to them as well as the quality of our facility and the safety of our visitors. Alongside this award is our membership of the World Association of Zoos and Aquaria (WAZA) and which is by invitation only. Representing the top 300 organisations worldwide, we are one of only 6 members in the whole of Africa to have been invited to join this prestigious organisation, to give you an idea of the level of excellence these awards require, we are in league with Ushaka Marine World, the Two Oceans Aquarium and the National Zoo in Pretoria. I think that this is quite important to stress; we do not market ourselves as Rescue Centre/Rehabilitation Centre/Animal Sanctuary and so on. Although we do all of those things; we do not feel the need to classify our business as such. It is always worth keeping in mind that organisations, named as per the above do not form part of a cohesive body that ensures standards of operations.

We house animals which come from varied backgrounds (rescued, rehabilitated, captive-bred) and provide them with world-class care whilst facilitating a platform to educate the public and run campaigns in order to fund and create awareness for animal and environmental issues. Modern zoological facilities, such as ourselves, aim to promote animal conservation, educate people, and support further wildlife research. The three are entwined to ensure the animals are housed to the highest possible standards of welfare. Staff are dedicated to providing species-specific housing, appropriate diets and husbandry to ensure that the animals’ lives are as natural as possible within captivity. Most of our animals (and those within Zoological facilities) have been born and bred in captivity. They have never experienced “the wild”, which many people assume is a wonderful and safe place, despite destruction of natural habitats for palm oil, threats from climate change, land repossession and farming or the increase in poaching.
