Kilo’s first overseas endeavour is situated on the beautiful shores of Bali, along the Jalan Drupadi stretch in the vibrant Seminyak district. Kilo Bali offers Kilo’s signature dishes, but also presents specials that are created with local ingredients and produce in mind. The menu is helmed by Chef Hans, who look to transform the sharing experience while captivating the diner’s imagination and palate. Distinguished by unconventional and modern minimalist architecture that challenges the traditional landscape, Kilo Bali offers a quiet respite away from all the hustle and bustle.

CONCEPT

The word ‘Kilo’ is actually derived from the phonetic name of the half-blue, half-yellow nautical flag for ‘K’, which signals the message “I wish to communicate with you.” As such, Kilo aims to communicate moments defined by hearty food, soulful music, warm conversations, and unforgettable occasions. A place that feels like home for people from all different walks and circles of life, Kilo welcomes you for a sharing experience amongst family and friends, both old and new.

BACKGROUND

Kilo’s predecessor was Raw Kitchen Bar, which opened in Bukit Timah in 2008. Here, the basis for Kilo was formed — the sense that you’ve simply stepped into someone’s home, not a restaurant; the essence of Kilo’s sharing spirit; a place for friends to catch up over food, drinks, and music; a way for people to meet other people and establish new friendships. It was also at Raw Kitchen Bar that the menu for Kilo was first conceived, and then later refined, edited, and adapted.

The first Kilo restaurant opened three years later in the nondescript Ture building by the Kallang River. The home setting was brought into a larger venue with this move, and allowed the Kilo identity to grow while still retaining its roots. A year after, in 2012, Kilo opened a branch within concept store Pact in Orchard Central, introducing the brand to a different audience. Kilo Lounge opened on the top floor of the same Kallang building in 2014, and is fast becoming a go-to venue for underground DJs, alternative performances, and an intimate after-dark experience. Kilo has most recently ventured overseas, opening an outlet in Seminyak, Bali in September 2014 bringing the Kilo experience to a different part of the world.

FOOD

Best described as fusion food, Kilo’s menu takes inspiration from different cuisines around the world and draws on the heritage of its owners and chefs. What started off as a primarily Japanese menu has grown to include Italian, Southern American, Thai, and Korean elements. Highlights of the menu include Seafood Ceviche with tuna, salmon, and octopus; Beef Tongue Tacos with an apple miso slaw, roasted jalapeño, and garlic butter; Spicy Duck & Pomelo Salad with nam yam, green mango, and duck skin; and Chicken Bulgogi with pickled shiitakes, tempura flakes, and horseradish mayo.

DESIGN

The Kilo style is anchored by a rawness that is tempered by utilitarian, homely elements. Evident across all outlets is a liberal use of raw concrete that forms tabletops, bar counters, and the flooring. The furniture in the restaurants is mainly wooden, while cushy leather and canvas sofas fill the Kilo Lounge. The lighting is kept low and ambient, creating a relaxing, soothing atmosphere for after-work gatherings and slow dinners. Artwork, collected and curated by the owners, fills the spaces, as do a mix of carpets and greenery. This eclectic mix of furnishings serves to create the impression that you’ve stepped into someone’s home, instead of a restaurant.
