Mandeville is a 10 minute drive from Gore and best known for it's historic Old Mandeville Airfield. The Croydon Aviation Heritage Trust recognises the dream of pushing a classic vintage aircraft out of the hanger, carrying out a pre-flight check, calling the magic word "Contact" before the throaty roar of the engine shatters the early morning silence. Croydon Aviation Heritage Centre is a nationally significant museum dedicated to preserving and celebrating New Zealand's light civil aviation heritage. Displays and interpretations celebrate the colourful stories of pioneer aviators and their equally colourful machines. We offer scenic flights in classic de Havilland aircraft, bookings advised and flights are weather permitting. Don a leather jacket and goggles and experience the thrill of a flight in an open cockpit vintage de Havilland Tiger Moth Biplane. Croydon Aircraft Company's workshop specialises in restoring wood and fabric aircraft from the late 1920's to 1940's. Weekday visits are by arrangement only, please enquire when visiting the Croydon Aviation Heritage Centre. Also in the Mandeville Precinct are Miss Cocoa Coffee offering delicious fresh food and coffee. Money for Wine which has a wide range of gifts, clothing and home wares. Croydon Aviation Centre is also home to the Waimea Plains Railway Trust, which is establishing a railway track and has a Rogers K 92 Steam Locomotive in it's collection. The Croydon Aviation Heritage Centre host a rotating programme of exhibitions. These are by local, regional and national artists and are staged in conjunction with the Eastern Southland Gallery, while heritage themed presentations are developed in partnership with the Gore Historical Museum. Entry to the exhibition space is free.
