The Boatshed Kayaks limted

We have a number of options but our 3hour glow worms tour is always in demand. This fantastic kayak adventure offers something very special for the whole family. We start from the Epworth camp and kayak our way down a truly beautiful section of the Waikato River, to the Pokaiwhenua stream. With stunning twilight lake views we head under the Pokaiwhenua Bridge and into the glow-worm canyon.

Draped with native ferns, the canyon offers a true slice of New Zealand Beauty, and as the light fades away the unique incandescence of the glow-worms start to shine from the surrounding walls. After a quick glass of some of New Zealand’s finest wines (hot drink for the kids) complimented with some tasty cheeses had over the warmth of a campfire, it’s back in the boats, as we drift slowly down stream using only the light from the glow-worms. Viewing glow-worms from a kayak on the surface of the world is a whole different experience from seeing them inside a cave like at Waitomo.

We have a minimum age of five years. This trip requires only a moderate level of fitness.
We recommend that people bring light warm clothing (NO JEANS!) Warm waterproof jackets will be provided and waterproof pants will be available.
The trip departs from the Boatshed at 21 Amber Lane, RD2, Cambridge, which is a short 15min drive from the Epworth camp. Transport is not provided - we will travel to and from Epworth Camp in a convoy so ensure you have enough petrol.
The trip is fully guided by experienced Boatshed guides and all the kayak equipment is provided.
Trip departure times very depending on daylight hours and there is a minimum group size of 6 people so bookings are essential.
There is a maximum group size of 16 and we like to use double sea-kayaks, so if you have an uneven group number you may be put with someone else. As of 10th May, trips are departing at 4pm and finishing at 8pm.

Karapiro option 2 – The Hidden Karapiro Waterfalls

This is our most popular half day trip and is the perfect daytime activity for the whole family. The trip starts from The Boatshed and takes you across Lake Karapiro to a hidden inlet. The inlet offers access to two waterfalls which are only accessible via kayak. The first waterfall takes you up a narrow section of canyon which is draped in native ferns and is the easier of the two to access. The second takes you further along the inlet to a place which at first glance seems like a dead end. After ducking under a few ferns it opens up to a hidden stream which takes you through the forest to the more spectacular of the two waterfalls.
This trip is non guided and open to those aged 5 and over.
You will be given a map of the area and shown the best way to get to the waterfalls.
You will be given a brief kayak lesson and helped with the set-up of your kayak.
The trip takes around 2hrs but you will have 3hrs to complete the trip.
There are a number of great spots to get out and swim or to have lunch along the way so it pays to bring a towel and a change of clothes.
Bookings are essential.
Price for Single sea kayak $25 – 3hr hire
Price for Double sea kayak $50 – 3hr hire
Price for Stand up paddle board $20 – 2hr hire (if you have never paddle boarded before it might pay to talk to us first regarding this option). See our SUP section.

Karapiro Option 3- Waterfalls drop off (shorter option)

This is the option for someone who doesn't want to paddle as far. Meet at the Boatshed Kayaks then be transported to drop off point where it is just a short paddle to the Hidden waterfalls inlet. The inlet offers access to two beautiful waterfalls which are only accessible via kayak. Then a small paddle back over Lake Karapiro back to the Boatshed kayaks where warm showers are waiting.
