Waimarie Centre (previously known as the Whanganui Riverboat Centre) is located on the banks of the Whanganui River at 1a Taupo Quay and is the central hub for all Waimarie® operations.
The booking office at Waimarie Centre is where you can make bookings and purchase cruise tickets, gift vouchers and Waimarie® merchandise.
We are open 10.00am-2.00pm Wednesday to Monday (October-April) or by arrangement. We are also open from 4.30pm-5.30pm every Friday that Cruising on Friday operates and New Zealand public holiday Monday to coincide with scheduled cruises.
Waimarie Centre is housed within a 134-year old building that was originally built as a single story rowing facility for the Wanganui Rowing Club in 1881. A second floor was added circa 1910 to create an architecturally unique rowing building and is one of the earliest in New Zealand. You can still see the original W.R.C (short for Wanganui River Club), wooden letters above the front door at the entrance to the building.
The buildings historic connections complement our Waimarie Paddle Steamer and our Waimarie Museum perfectly – together all three make Waimarie® a unique historical attraction for both locals and visitors.
The building was near derelict and close to collapse on its totara blocks – it was during the 1990’s, community volunteers with a range of skills and expertise turned the building into a wonderful workshop for Project Waimarie.
Thanks to Wanganui’s Master Painters the building was recently given a fresh coat of paint. Just over 230 litres of paint, carefully chosen to match our Waimarie Paddle Steamer herself, was donated by local paint businesses.
Today the building is home to our Waimarie Museum which houses an intricate display of river-related photographs, artefacts and memorabilia of the last century.
You will also find a full photographic record of the salvage of the Waimarie Paddle Steamer and Waimarie’s famous homing pigeons, which join passengers on every Cruising at 11.
