In April 2010 the famous golf course designer Pete Dye finished his Caribbean masterpiece at the Santa Barbara Plantation on Curaçao. Named after the Plantation’s 19th century limestone quarry, this championship seaside layout was designed to fit seamlessly into the land’s hills and valleys. A challenge to players of all skill levels, the course meanders between the stunning blue Caribbean Sea, the slopes and hills of Tafelberg Mountain and the sheltered bay known as Spanish Water. No wonder Old Quarry Golf Course is ranked in the Top 3 of Caribbean golf courses.
Curaçao, a constituent country of the Kingdom of The Netherlands, is situated just north of South America and under the hurricane belt. On this largest and most diverse island of the Dutch Antilles you can choose all kinds of activities, beautiful beaches and fine restaurants. With its dry climate and all year round high temperatures (unlike many other Caribbean islands), visitors can enjoy a round of golf 365 days a year.
To ensure the course would be built true to the conservation principles of Santa Barbara’s owners, Pete Dye’s son P.B. planted its fairways and greens with the hearty Paspalum grass, which can be irrigated using both brackish and recycled water.
The course’s signature hole #2, better known as “The Tale of the Gale” runs up the Caribbean coast and is a real challenge when the north-east trade-winds blow which is a regular occurrence. With the turquoise Caribbean Sea to your right and a heavy left to right headwind on only your second hole – you surely get the picture……
With its friendly staff, fully stocked golf shop, locker rooms and rental shoes and Titleist clubs The Old Quarry Golf Course leaves nothing to be desired. Of course there are also possibilities to join clinics or have private lessons for both beginners and advanced players on the well-equipped grass tee-driving range. For your Après Golf there are plenty of venues to choose from starting right next to the 18th green and above the Barbara Beach marina where you will find Boca 19, a Caribbean casual bar/restaurant with great pub grub, an open air terrace and a view that will take your breath away. Other bar and restaurant options are available at the adjacent and amazingly beautiful Santa Barbara Beach & Golf Resort.
