Ivan Meštrović (1883, Vrpolje, Croatia – 1962, South Bend, Indiana, USA) is one of the most prominent Croatian artists of the first half of the 20th century: a sculptor, painter, architect and writer.
Atelijer Meštrović in Zagreb, today the art museum with a permanent display of Ivan Meštrović's work, once family house and studio of the artist.
The house is adapted part of the complex Meštrović had originally bought and then expanded at the beginning of the 1920s when he returned to his home country as a successful and widely acknowledged artist. Atelijer Meštrović is situated in the historical centre of Zagreb – the Upper Town. The interior is divided into four areas: the atrium, the artist's studio, the residential area and the garden.
Owing to his Donation Act to the Croatian people of 1952, numerous masterpieces, impressive pieces of architecture and refined spaces, today managed by Muzeji Ivana Meštrovića, cover four locations; his home and studio in Zagreb, the family villa and renovated Renaissance castello, or Kaštilac in Split, and Otavice, whence his family originated, where visitors have the opportunity to enjoy hundreds of works on show.
