Aarhus from inside a rainbow
When approaching Aarhus from the seaside, you can see the Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson’s spectacular work Your rainbow
panorama in the horizon. The 150-metre-long circular footbridge floats 50 metres over the ground on the roof of ARoS, and from it
you can see the city of Aarhus and Aarhus Bay in all the colours of the rainbow. Beneath the rainbow there are thousands of square
metres on which you can experience the extensive collection of art at ARoS.
A five meter tall Boy
Australian artist Ron Mueck’s (b. 1958) sculpture Boy has become one of the great landmarks of ARoS – measuring
4.5 metres in height and weighing 500 kg. This super realistic sculpture of the five metre tall boy impresses both children and adults with its enormous attention to details; the surface of the skin seems to be alive, while the veins and signs of incipient body hair are clearly to be seen.
The building
ARoS Aarhus Art Museum’s striking architecture is created by schmidt/hammer/lassen/ architects. The museum is designed specifically to welcome visitors, straddling a public thoroughfare. A spectacular spiral staircase rises up from the museum walkway providing dramatic connections to the exhibition galleries. With 17,700 square metres spanning ten levels the museum has ample space to show its extensive collection of paintings, sculptures, installations, art videos and drawings. The museum has a collection of works by international artists such as Bill Viola, Tony Oursler, Carsten Höller, Miwa Yanagi and James Turrell.
