Berlin Zoo, which opened in 1844 as the first zoo in Germany, is at present the zoo with the largest number of different animals. Right in the heart of Berlin, a total of 18,662 animal inhabitants of 1,380 species are living in the zoo and aquarium. In addition to exceptional exotics, such as kiwis and axolotls, Berlin Zoo is home to many species in danger of extinction as well as rare domestic animal breeds.
The Hippo House is a unique attraction in Berlin Zoo. The visitors can observe the underwater ballet of the heavy hippos weighing up to three tons and the smaller pygmy hippos through gigantic panoramic glass.
Even nocturnal animals, such as the snooping aardvarks and hopping bush babies with their huge ears and the bustling bush babies can be admired in the Nocturnal House of Berlin Zoo.

Exciting daily animal feedings and shows inspire more than three million zoo visitors per year. Our small guests can get up close to domestic animals in the petting zoo. After that, they can romp around in the huge adventure playgrounds. Exciting rallies and safaris in the Zoo school convey in a playful manner lots of worthwhile knowledge about the animal inhabitants of the Zoo.
