In the 17th Century, Amsterdam was the world’s largest port and the Netherlands was a world power. Much of Amsterdam’s history is related tot he sea. To truly understand Amsterdam and it’s inhabitants, you must understand our seafaring past. Visit the Scheepvaartmuseum – to experience this history first hand.
• The Arsenal – home to the National Maritime Museum. This historic building dating from 1656 and designed as storage house for the Admiralty of Amsterdam. The glass roofing of the inner courtyard is a dazzling glass ceiling made of 1200 different pieces of glass.
• Discover our maritime art
Art lovers won’t be disappointed. With over 800 paintings and 1800 models of ships, there’s much to admire. Our collection includes: ship decorations, navigation instruments, maps, glassware, porcelain and ceramics.
• Hear the stories
Hear the stories of the admirals and captains who prospered and the sailors who met their end at sea. Throughout the museum, interactive technology helps you experience life in the Golden Age.
• Enjoy a day with your family. Lots of hands-on activities for children. They can climb aboard the replica of the East Indiaman Amsterdam or play the Life on Board game and work their way up from sailor to captain.

• Opening hours: daily from 09:00 – 17:00 hrs The museum is closed on January 1st, April 27th and December 25th.
