The Kobarid Museum

The Kobarid Museum, receiver of the Council of Europe award in 1993, exhibits photographs, maps, weaponry and personal objects of soldiers along with documentary film to create an extensive and captivating tale of the First World War as it unraveled in this region. It narrates the cruelty of highland combat in the Julian Alps, the story of the harrowing Soča front and in particular the 12th battle of Soča, one of the largest-scale highland conflicts in military history, which took place in October 1917 when allied German and Austro-Hungarian forces employed a new military strategy to push the Italians all the way back to the river Piave. The underlying theme of the museum is the condemnation of the atrocities and senseless suffering caused by war. Museum is open every day throughout the year.
