Casa Milà (La Pedrera)

Casa Milà, popularly known as ‘La Pedrera’ (the stone quarry), an ironic allusion to the resemblance of its façade to an open quarry, was constructed between 1906 and 1912 by Antoni Gaudí (1852-1926). For its uniqueness, artistic and heritage value have received major recognition and in 1984 was inscribed on UNESCO World Heritage List, for its exceptional universal value.

Nowadays it is the headquarters of Catalunya-La Pedrera Foundation and houses a cultural centre that is a reference point in Barcelona for the range of activities it organises and the different spaces for exhibitions and other public uses it contains.

Casa Milà today is a beacon shining with creation and knowledge, a great container full of content, which has a crucial role to play in the transformation of society and commitment to the people.

La Pedrera by day, an essential visit for understanding Gaudí
A visit to Casa Milà, popularly known as ‘La Pedrera’ (the stone quarry), a building that is a reference point in world architecture, allows you to understand and gain a deep knowledge of the work of Antoni Gaudí and, in particular, his last civil work, La Pedrera.

A visit to La Pedrera by day covers different museum areas – the Espai Gaudí and the Pedrera Apartment – which, together with the Provença and Passeig de Gràcia Courtyard, the Exhibition Room and the Roof-Terrace, make up the tour of the building. The Espai Gaudí, in the attic, offers a broad view of his work, showing the most basic traits of his clearly visual and empirical way of understanding architecture through models, audiovisuals and objects. The route around the space is divided into seven areas, one of which is devoted entirely to La Pedrera. The Pedrera Apartment recreates the home and life of a Barcelona bourgeois family of the first third of the twentieth century. It is also possible to visit the former residence of the Milà family, which houses the Temporary Exhibition Room, as long as there is an exhibition.

Casa Milà is the only Gaudí interpretation centre in Barcelona devoted to providing an understanding of the work of this architectural genius. A total of 4,500 m2 can be visited, spread over five floors. The only areas that cannot be visited are the private homes and offices that remain in the building.
