Saul Alcaraz will teach you how to work with glass from his studio in Santa Barbara, California.
Classes are available to enthusiasts ages 12 to 80
I've always wanted to try it, and, since I happened to have a couple of free hours available on my way up to wine tasting in Los Olivos, I thought I'd give it a try. And boy was it worth it.
First off, classes are two hours long, and Saul (the owner) said that he tries to keep it to a maximum of two people per class (although he'll open it open to more for private parties). Saul is SUPER friendly and enthusiastic, and very patient with new students.
Here is the process.:
You show up and Saul introduces you to the tools that you will be using. He then walks you through the process of making a piece by taking some glass out of the oven, rolling it, coloring it, shaping it and then dropping it off to cool. You then get to decide what types of pieces you want to make, and what colors you want the pieces to be. We got to make three pieces each. I made a pitcher, a vase, and a Christmas ornament.
The process itself does not sound all that complicated however, making an attractive piece does take some practice... although apparently I'm somewhat of a natural at it as Saul's wife was really impressed with the first item I made.
Some you should know/consider before you start glassblowing:
• There is a 2000 degree oven an molten glass which you will be using, so it does get hot! You WILL sweat, so make certain to wear the clothing they tell you to, and bring plenty of water. Although we did not get any, it is possible to get burned.
• Consider what you would like the piece to look like before you start, although you can change it as you go, it helps to have a style/form in mind.
• Remember the basic color chart you learned as a child, and what colors mix to make new colors. I wanted to make a red and green Christmas ornament, but didn't realize that when you add those two colors together, they form brown.
