Fairfield Museum and History Center

At the Fairfield Museum, visitors enjoy engaging art and history exhibitions ranging from Connecticut’s colonial roots to photography and culture. Programs and activities for families and youth include the Holiday Express Train Show, Family Focus days, Scavenger Hunts, Vacation Camps, Halloween on the Green and interactive Walking Tours exploring the Town Green Campus.

The Fairfield Museum and History Center has spearheaded the revitalization of the Museum Commons on the Town Green to create a dynamic regional destination that will connect art, performance, history and community. The new center for cultural activity – The Museum Commons – will launch this summer with live theater, festivals, concerts and more! On Saturday, June 10, 2017 new exhibitions will open to the public in three buildings on the Museum Commons: Victorian Cottage and Barn (1888) and Sun Tavern (c.1780). More than 400 years of diverse stories are embedded in this intimate campus, which also serves as the Town of Fairfield’s civic center and the home of the Fairfield Museum and History Center.

Interactive and hands-on experiences for adults, children and families will interweave topics such as society, the environment, family life, politics and agriculture, linking them to the Fairfield Museum’s exhibition, Creating Community: Exploring 375 Years of Our Past. The project strengthens the Fairfield Museum’s core mission to make history personal, engaging, and meaningful by connecting people with the complex history of this region and its broader context in the nation and the world.

Visitors to the Fairfield Museum and History Center discover the rich history of the Town Green through informative signs featuring historic photographs placed throughout the historic center of Fairfield. Visitors will be able to read the stories about the people, events, and sites that have made Fairfield such a unique community for more than three centuries.

The Meeting Hall overlooking the Museum Commons on the Town Green hosts lectures, panels and shared discussions led by distinguished scholars, university professors and historians that illuminate history through dialogue and debate with the larger community. Researchers from across the country utilize the unique resources in the Special Collections Library and Reading Room, including genealogy and family papers that date back to 1639.

The Museum Shop features a wide selection of Fairfield gifts and books.
