Trinity Church on the Green has been an important and vibrant part of the history of New Haven, Connecticut, and America for over 300 years. There has been an official Episcopal presence in New Haven ever since Anglican missionary priests first ministered to the region beginning in 1705. In 1723 a parish in New Haven was organized by Rev. Dr. Samuel Johnson. Under Dr. Johnson’s guidance, the Colonial wooden First Church was built in 1752-1753, just before the beginning of the French and Indian War in the American Colonies. The Gothic “Trap Rock” Second Church, the first Gothic Revival structure in North America and the building still in use by the parish today, was constructed in the midst of the War of 1812 in 1814-1816. There have been many enhancements to the historic church (come see our newly restored Tiffany windows!), a cornerstone of New Haven’s lively religious, artistic, and community life.

Trinity is renowned both for the beauty and historical importance of its building as well as its remarkable liturgical music program, which has been a hallmark of the parish since its early existence. Established in 1885, Trinity's famed Choir of Men & Boys is one of the oldest such choirs in the United States. A Choir of Men & Girls was established in 2003. Trinity also boasts an outstanding 1935 Aeolian-Skinner organ of 78 ranks, one of the crown jewels in a city that has no shortage of beautiful and significant instruments. The Choirs of Men & Boys and Men & Girls, as well as a volunteer adult Parish Choir, may be heard nearly every Sunday during the academic year at Trinity's varied worship services: a nontraditional service at 9am, a traditional (Rite 1) Eucharist or Morning Prayer at 11am, and the occasional Evensong or Taize service at 5pm.
