The Harry S. Truman Little White House is a presidential retreat, summit site and functioning White House of America. It was used by seven American Presidents ( William Howard Taft 1912, Franklin Roosevelt 1939, Harry S. Truman 1946-1952, Dwight Eisenhower 1955-1956, John Kennedy 1961 and 1962, Jimmy carter 1996 and 2007 and William Clinton 2005). The site is a 5000 square foot historic house built in 1890 as naval officer's housing and furnished as Truman's Winter White House from 1947 through 1952 for a total of 175 days.
The majority of the furnishings were purchased for President Truman's use and used to recreate the house as it appeared in 1949.
Legislation was enacted at the site and several summits led by the Departments of Defense and the Department of State have occurred there. The most notable being John Kennedy and British PM Harold Macmillan in 1961 and Secretary of State Colin Powell and the presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan. An acre of botanical tropical gardens surround the house.
