Spady Cultural Heritage Museum

The Spady Cultural Heritage Museum is dedicated to discovering, collecting and sharing the African-American history and heritage of Palm Beach County. Located in the former home of the late Solomon D. Spady, the most prominent African American educator and community leader in Delray Beach from 1922 to 1957, the museum opened in July 2001 and is the only Black History Museum & Cultural Center of its kind in Palm Beach County.

It has become a destination for people of all cultures seeking information about Florida’s early black communities and culture. The museum has exhibited a series of shows, highlighting the talents and influences of African-Americans, Caribbean-Americans and Haitian-Americans. Shows ranging from photographic galleries of founding families to contemporary shows on minorities in medicine and the arts have adorned its walls.

In addition, through its Youth Cultural Empowerment Program, Ride & Remember Trolley Tours, special events, Spady Living Heritage Festival and community forums, the museum has become a community hub for the exchange of ideas, art and culture.

Some of The Spady Museum's signature events include:

The Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast. The Spady Cultural Heritage Museum begins each year (January) with a signature event celebrating the life and legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. At each annual breakfast there is featured entertainment, such as choirs or poetry presentations along with honored speakers who share their perspectives on Dr. King’s legacy. The community event is open to the public.

The Spady Living Heritage Festival. In celebration of Black History Month (February), The Spady Cultural Heritage Museum welcomes everyone to the Spady Living Heritage Festival (#SpadyLHF). We bring cultural fun to the streets of Delray Beach. Live performances fill the afternoon at the Spady Museum. February is a month dedicated to celebrating, recognizing and learning about the contributions of African-Americans to the development and prosperity of the United States.

Juneteenth Celebration. The Spady Cultural Heritage Museum welcomes everyone to a cultural celebration, recognizing a special date in American and Florida history – commemorating the end of slavery. Guests enjoy music, story-telling, speakers and catered entrees, dedicated to remembering Juneteenth (June 19).

Ride & Remember Trolley Tour. When you board the “Ride & Remember” Trolley Tour, the history of Delray Beach comes alive! A popular program for residents and tourists alike, The Trolley Tour takes riders on a journey through the city’s five historic districts. Riders will tour the Spady Cultural Heritage Museum and two other locations. Riders will also disembark at select historic sites for a closer look at the fascinating history of Delray Beach. Every second Saturday of the month, 10 a.m.-noon.

The Spady Museum’s Youth Cultural Empowerment Program (YCEP). YCEP encourages area youth to express themselves through dance, art and yoga. Held every Saturday, the program features the YCEP Dance Project, which teaches the elements of West African and hip-hop dance, and the art component of YCEP, which teaches original art creation techniques. Other program components include engaging youth in learning healthy cooking, soap-making, cultural history activities, poetry, textile art, Kemetic yoga and field trips.
