Built in 1888, the Old Jail Art Center is one of the three oldest buildings in historic Darien. The former jail cells house a museum of historical relics from Darien's storied past, creating a visual timeline from the prehistory of Native Americans, through the colonial settlement of Georgia, the Civil War burning of Darien, and the big ships of the timber trade.
This brick and tabby structure is also home to the art galleries of McIntosh Art Association, a non-profit organization comprised of many artists who have made the coast their home and continually capture the natural, unspoiled beauty of the Georgia coast on paper and canvas. Art exhibit change every two months.
The Painted Palette, the art center's gift shop, features books penned by local authors, art prints, home décor, and coastal inspired gifts. A small visitor's center also operates out of the facility. Admission is free. Gallery hours are Monday thru Saturday, 11 to 3.
