“Hellenic” is synonymous for the word “Greek.” It means: of or pertaining to Greece, its people, language, and culture. Dating back to Homer’s time, it is derived from Hellen, grandson of Prometheus, and mythical founder and progenitor of the Greeks, who were named Hellenes in his honor.

The Greeks were great storytellers and so are we. The National Hellenic Museum tells the rich story of the past, but always with a clear connection to the present day experience of our visitors. The exhibitions and cultural programs are inventive, unique, and share the Greek story from unexpected points of view.

Tours, school programs, classes, events, children’s and family programs use the Museum’s permanent and temporary exhibitions as a foundation for learning. All of our educational programs and exhibitions for children and adults encourage experiential learning as well as offer new ways of thinking about Greek history and culture. They portray Greek heritage and Hellenic legacy, sparking inquiry and discussion about the broader issues in our lives and communities.
