The Children's Museum of Indianapolis is the largest in the world in terms of size at just under 500,000 square feet (472,900), 120,000 artifacts, five full floors of interactive permanent and temporary exhibits, and more than 1.25 million visitors each year. Soon, the biggest and best museum will get even bigger. It will expand in 2018 with a brand new outdoor health and fitness experience called the Riley Children's Health Sports Legends Experience. The new 7.5 acre immersive outdoor and indoor family health, fitness, and sports experience will inspire visitors to be active together in a non-competitive way while creating healthy habits that will stay with entire families for a lifetime. Sports Legends will be featured to help add inspiration/motivation and to be compelling to people of all ages.
The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis is much more than a “play land’ for youngsters – it is strategically designed to engage adults as well. Real science, real history, and innovative hands-on activities are used interchangeably to encourage intergenerational family learning. Costumed actor interpreters bring stories to life in a variety of exhibits ranging from Beyond Spaceship Earth to Take Me There:® China (the exploration of another culture intended to foster awareness of differences and similarities of another culture). Photo opportunities abound with North America’s largest water clock to one of Dale Chihuly’s largest glass-blown sculptures, standing 43-foot-tall. A real paleontologist will show you how he’s preserving real fossils in the Paleo Prep Lab amid some of the rarest specimens ever found in our Dinosphere exhibit. National Geographic Treasures of the Earth explores some of the world’s hidden treasures that have only recently been discovered.
