Want to ride on a ferry across Frenchman Bay and explore both sides of Acadia National Park? Well, the Schoodic Ferry is here to help you do just that! Our ferry makes trips every Monday to Saturday in between Winter Harbor and Bar Harbor. On the Schoodic Ferry we strive to differ from other ferrys in the area by making research a big goal on each trip as well as getting everyone across the bay safely. We try our best to integrate science and history directly into every passenger trip. During July an International Protected Species Observer named Clare Echlin from Scotland, with be onboard with us conducting visual marine mammal and pelagic bird surveys. Throughout the season, the Schoodic Ferry's own marine scientist/engineer Dr. Captain Kaitlyn Mullen will be developing and testing data collection methods for water quality monitoring, changing physical oceanographic factors, and changing micro-currents within Frenchman Bay. Interested in learning more about seals, porpoise, birds, baitfish, lobsters, plankton, ocean currents or geology? Or even just more about the islands you see in the bay? Join us for a ride that includes working marine scientists aboard! Our ferry is also a community-driven, non-profit ferry - so you always pay the lowest possible price for the best possible experience. PRICES: Round trip tickets are $25.00 a person and one way tickets are $12.50 a person. Maine residents can get a discount as long as ID is shown on the boat, it is $17.50 a person for Maine residents. BIKES or DOGS are always welcome and ride free!
BAR HARBOR: Upbeat and fast-paced, Mount Desert Island is by far the most visited section of Acadia National Park. It includes timeless treasures such as Cadillac Mountain, the tallest point on the eastern seaboard; Thunder Hole, a marine cave that actually "thunders" when the wave action is high; and Sand Beach, a rare flat expanse of oceanfront sand nestled between rugged granite cliffs. Bar Harbor teems with gardens and an abundance of easily accessible museums, storefronts, dining and entertainment. Our dock is located at the College of the Atlantic; 105 Eden St. Bar Harbor, ME 04609. There is no customer parking available on campus but you can walk or take the free Island Explorer bus there (it's bus #2 Eden Street!). From our dock we are only a ten minute walk away from free, all day, parking at the end of West street. When you get to campus, follow the signs to the Turrets building, and then continue down the gravel path to the dock. Once you see the yellow boat you'll know you're there! TRIPS LEAVING BAR HARBOR: 7:50am, 10:00am, 12:30p, 3:45pm, and 6:00pm. On Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays until August 31st we also have a sunset trip leaving Bar Harbor at 8:30pm.
WINTER HARBOR: Uncrowded and unspoiled, the Schoodic Peninsula section of Acadia is perfectly tailored to those who would like to leave the hustle and bustle of the outside world behind. Hike up Schoodic Head for remarkable views of Downeast Maine, cross the low-tide bar to Little Moose Island to search for seabirds and tidal pools, or bicycle around the many miles of trails while watching waves crash into Maine's rugged coast. Stop and listen to the sounds of nature as you enjoy this remarkable oceanfront wilderness. Unchanged much by time or passers-by, Winter Harbor is a fishing village with an active working waterfront community, several small shops, lots of local art and artists and genuine Maine home cooking. The dock is located at the Schoodic Marine Center; 88 Sargent Street, Winter Harbor, ME 04693. From Route 186 turn onto Sargent Street, following the signs for the Schoodic Marine Center and Ferry services. TRIPS LEAVING WINTER HARBOR: 9:00am, 11:15am, 2:30pm, and 5:00pm. We also offer a early morning trip which is only Monday-Friday at 5:45am, you need to call before 6:00pm the day before to make a reservation. On Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays until August 31st we also offer a sunset trip leaving at 7:00pm.
