The Museum:
In 1998 the city of Little Falls gave its approval and support for the Minnesota Fishing Museum. The current collection of over 10,000 artifacts beautifully displayed and lovingly maintained. A Log Cabin Set recreates an old time fish camp at the lake. A large diorama depicts a typical spearing dark house on a frozen lake, complete with a Northern Pike moving in to be taken. Numerous displays showcase the artifacts found in many anglers’ tackle boxes through the years. Motors dating from 1902 are displayed throughout. The aquarium with live native fish is the focal point for learning and just plain relaxing. Stop in and step back in time as you experience the evolution of freshwater fishing.

History
Fishing has always played a vital role in the lives of Minnesotans, beginning with the Native Americans and our state’s early settlers. Until the early 1800’s the term “sport fishing” was non-existent, as the sole purpose of fishing was to obtain food. People used spears, clubs, bare hands, nets, and any means possible to capture fish for the table.
The idea of a fishing museum began in 1990. Al Baert was researching one of his old lures, a 1912 Surf Oreno, manufactured by the South Bend Bait Company. Holding that old wooden lure in his hand he realized it was not the dollar value of the lure that was so meaningful, but the wonderful stories and memories it represented as part of the heritage and history of freshwater fishing in Minnesota. Al contacted long-time friend Morry Sauve, and the dream of a Minnesota Fishing Museum was born.
