The Big Horn County Historical Museum is the largest museum of its kind in Montana. It is comprised of a very modern main gallery building, and 26 historical and exhibit buildings. It has a sheltered picnic area, spacious parking that easily accommodates RVs, and boardwalks that connect all the structures on over 20 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds. The main gallery houses exhibits on Fort Custer, Will James, Crow and Northern Cheyenne Indian artifacts, and J.H. Sharpe paintings. We rotate art and photograph exhibits through our Program Room, and offer many "Made in Montana" gifts in the gift shop.
The historical buildings include the original farmhouse and barn that made up the farm that was originally donated to build the museum on, the Will James cabins from the Rocking R Ranch, a Train Depot from Lodge Grass, MT, a one room school house, a 1917 Church, Undertakers business, and a Homesteaders Shack, as well as others. Several large barns house over 50 restored and preserved cars, trucks and tractors. An additional building has a Ice Cream Parlor exhibit, horse drawn buggy collection, and a branding exhibit.
The museum is very conveniently located on I-90, exit 497. The Little Big Horn Battlefield is 12 miles away. During the third week of June, the community celebrates Little Big Horn Days, and the museum offers many additional experiences, including Calvary re-enactors and a Calvary encampment with live-fire demonstrations of cannon and small arms weapons, blacksmithing, and interpretive talks about the history of the area.
The historical buildings are open from May 1 to September 30. The main gallery is open year-round. Admission is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors, $3 for students and military, and free for 6 and under. We welcome buses, school groups and tours. Discounts for bus groups are available.
