Historic Rosedale Plantation

The neighbors called it "Frew's Folly," though the reason remains obscure. Perhaps it was the chrome yellow trim, a shocking contrast to the plank and log style houses common to the backcountry. It is unknown when the house became known as Rosedale. Originally part of a 911 acre plantation, Rosedale was built in 1815 by Archibald Frew, who was a merchant, postmaster and tax collector. The house was occupied from the 1830s by D. T. Caldwell and his family. Dr. Caldwell, in addition to his medical practice he ran the plantation. Rosedale is one of the finest examples of Federal period architecture in North Carolina and is noted for its faux grained woodwork and the original French wallpaper that survives in three rooms.

Today we are on just under 9 acres of land only 3 miles from uptown Charlotte. We are an accredited Urban Green Space as well as a Bird Habitat, and have amazing gardens with blooms year round. You are welcome to walk around the gardens for free, however the home is only open with house tours. House tours are Thursday-Sunday at 1:30 & 3:00 year yound. Additional tours at 1:30 on Wednesday & 11:00 am on Saturday seasonally, as well as a Garden tour every Wednesday at 12:30. Combination rates are available for garden & house tours. For the most up to date information please check http://historicrosedale.org/tours. Rosedale also hosts a number of special programs every year for Christmas, egg hunts, camps, and much more.
