Just outside of Berlin is the 13,000 square foot timber frame structure that houses Wendell August Forge, one of five retail locations and the only one in Ohio that feature unique, one-of-a-kind handcrafted metal gift ware that made Wendell August famous.
Inspired by the craftsmanship he saw in a coal mining blacksmith’s work, August saw an opportunity to create beautiful objects of decorative ironware that could be affordable. The business was born and the first product line introduced one-of- a-kind fireplace andirons, candlesticks, lighting standards, doorknockers, latches, railings, and grilles for windows and doors.
The Berlin facility features an expansive 5,000 square foot showroom and visitors are always delighted with the World’s Largest Amish Buggy made by a craftsman in the region. Overhead 300 feet of track carry a model LGB Train while an old fashioned nickelodeon plays multiple instruments and memorable songs.
A museum area gives visitors a glimpse into the history of the company while the interactive hand hammering room brings out the inner craftsman and allows guests to take home a creation they have made themselves.
The elaborate gift shop boasts more than 1,000 different handcrafted items by Wendell August, which include a wide array of designs including Amish Country themes, Dogwood, Hydrangea, Autumn, Tracery, Poinsettia, Evergreen and much more! Christmas and holiday ornaments, plates, unique wedding gifts, baby gifts, serving pieces and home accessories complement the many handcrafted products made by local artisans and craftsmen. Our products are proudly made in the U.S.A..
No trip to Ohio’s Amish Country is complete without a drive through the farmland on Route 62 ( two miles west of Route 515 and 4 miles east of Berlin) to Wendell August Forge.
