Congregation Mikveh Israel

Congregation Mikveh Israel worships in a building not far from its original 1782 redbrick structure on Cherry Street. The synagogue has moved three times before returning to its original neighborhood in 1976 where it serves a vibrant congregation, faithful to its tradition. Visitors can see copies of letters to the congregation from George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Reminders of the congregation’s long history include many furnishings from previous buildings and two sets of Torah ornaments (rimmonim) made by colonial silversmith Myer Meyers.
Visiting Hours & Gift Shop: Monday through Friday 10am to 4pm, Sunday 10am to 1pm. Group tours must be coordinated with the office.

Our services are in the Spanish & Portuguese Tradition, like that of Congregation Shearith Israel of New York and the Esnoga of Amsterdam.
Friday evening services begin at sunset and last about an hour. Saturday morning services go from 9am until 11:30am.
After every Shabbat service a meal is served. Contact the office for reservations.

The cemetery on Spruce Street (between 8th & 9th Streets) was founded in 1740. Part of Independence National Historical Park, it includes the grave of Rebecca Gratz (reportedly the inspiration for the character Rebecca in Sir Walter Scott’s Ivanhoe) as well as memorials to Haym Salomon, who
helped finance the American Revolution. It is open during the summer with a guide from 10am until 3pm every day except Monday and Saturday.
Even when it is not open, it is visible through its wrought iron fence.
