A landmark Texas Centennial structure, the Stone Fort Museum is housed in a reconstruction of Antonio Gil Y’Barbo’s 18th century stone house. Torn down in 1902, the stone house defined early Nacogdoches and the Stone Fort Museum celebrates the earliest history of the region. Join us as we discover early East Texas!
In 2016, Nacogdoches marked its tricentennial year celebrating the region’s Spanish heritage. The Stone Fort Museum’s current exhibit, "El Camino Real de los Tejas and Building Nacogdoches," highlights this rich history and focuses on the people that lived and traveled along the road. Museum collections and objects in the exhibit include flintlocks, flint knives, cruciform stirrups, belt knives, tools for traveling and tools for building a new home. In the eighteenth century, Spanish expeditions into eastern Texas lasted from several months to sometimes over a year. A century later, the trail served as a primary overland route for Anglo and African American migrations into Texas. Regardless of how or why people moved to the region, over time the large scale migration and the influx of talent led to major changes in communities such along the trail.
The museum’s K12 programs provide an informal learning experience that is catered to the teacher’s needs and allows students to make connections between history, science and art. Activities are available for all age groups and across the curriculum: Simple Machines, Scavenger Hunt, Find Four and Inventions, Eyeglasses & Optics. Museum docents guide students through inquiry-based activities that use objects as a tangible link to the past. Guided activities are available by reservation only. To plan a visit for public or homeschool groups, leaders should call to discuss the type of activity that fits their needs.
