The town of Cape Charles is located near the southern tip of the Delmarva Peninsula and hence is a departure point to travel across the Chesapeake Bay to Norfolk and Virginia Beach. The railroad was extended south to Cape Charles in the 1880s and large ships replaced the earlier sailing vessels that brough passengers and freight between Cape Charles and Norfolk/Virginia Beach. The Museum celebrates this rich railroad and Bay history, with some interesting added elements.
The Cape Charles Museum & Welcome Center has a rich collection of early postcards, archival photographs, ship models, railroad and crater artifacts many of which are on display at the Museum with appropriate captions. These include large models of the steamers and ferries that worked out of Cape Charles, railroad china, maps, locks etc, and old country store items. Also an exhibit of the early 17th century Arlington mansion with associated archeological objects, and information and samples from the large crater that hit the area 35 million years ago.
The Museum also serves as the town welcome center, with maps, brochures and other area information.
A spring "Shrimp Boil" fundraiser is held on the last Saturday of April, and a fall "Oyster Roast" the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Both are open to the public, but tickets should be purchased in advance. Call 757-331-1008 for more information.
From May through October a Farmers Market is held on the Museum grounds every Tuesday from 4 to 7 PM.
