The Grand Encampment Museum is the "GEM" of Southern Wyoming. It is located in Encampment between two scenic byways, near hiking trails, rivers, and lakes. The town and museum are nestled between the Snowy Range Mountains and the Sierra Madre Mountain Range. The GEM is open between Memorial Day and Columbus / Indigenous Day. Check our website for hours and events.
The Grand Encampment Museum (GEM) offers guided tours of the historic buildings which all tie into our unique story about copper mining, ranching, and logging in the Upper North Platte Valley. Visitors will experience how settlers whittled a way of life in the west. It also offers visitors a chance to slow down, and not only experience the west, but enjoy it. Encampment is a quiet historic town nestled at the base of the Sierra Madre Mountains. The GEM may be in a small town, but the museum itself is impressively large. It includes 15 historic buildings, a fire lookout tower, an historic aerial tramway, and a two-story outhouse. The buildings are filled with unique and rare artifacts of the west. It's no wonder it is called the GEM of Southern Wyoming!
Plan your visit: Depending on your schedule and interest, a visit to the GEM can take 30 minutes to 2 hours. Guided and self-guided tours are available from the main museum gallery. The GEM’s gift shop sells local and regional history books and more.
