Standing on the site of the only First World War battlefield in the UK, the Heugh Battery Museum offers a friendly welcome and the opportunity for visitors of all ages to find out all about the Bombardment of the Hartlepools on the 16th December 1914. Visitors can stand in the Battery Commend Post where orders were given to soldiers manning the guns at the Heugh Battery and Lighthouse Battery during the Bombardment. You can visit the spot where the first soldier to be killed by enemy action on British soil fell, the first since the English Civil War. As well as life on the home front, we have a re-construction of a British trench down in the old Magazine area where you can easily imagine how soldiers lived on the front line, and the difficulties they faced not only from enemy action but from the weather and living with rats and lice. Look out for our own resident rats!

The museum houses a collection of items commemorating the Bombardment, along with a large collection of artillery, rifles, uniforms and trench art. Guided tours of the museum are available on request, and booking ahead for larger groups is recommended. Not all of the site is accessible for those with limited mobility, there are areas only accessible by stairs. Please contact us if you have any questions about your visit.

There is also a cafe available on site, serving a range of hot and cold drinks, snacks and home baked scones and cakes. We also have two picnic areas, one on hard-standing and another on the grassed area with fabulous views of the coastline. Dogs are welcome at the museum, but not in the coffee shop. Water bowls are available for furry family members on request.
