The Temple Bar Inn

" A proper pub with well-kept real ales, oak beams, flagstones, and an open fire in winter. An inviting spot with a friendly atmosphere and accomplished cooking" (The AA, 2014).

Situated in the centre of the village of Ewyas Harold, The Temple Bar Inn looks from the outside much as it has done since the 1850s when it was first licensed. Visitors entering for the first time since it was refurbished a few years ago will find themselves in a pub that is light and airy but still rustic, and with a friendly, welcoming atmosphere. The taps are placed, unusually, at the back of the bar, but real ales and local beverages are served here as well as teas, coffees and homemade cake. A blackboard provides those who like a mental challenge with a daily puzzle to solve.

From the bar, guests can walk through to the pool/darts room or into the restaurant. There are flagstones and oak beams here too, and the walls and windowsills showcase the work of local artists.

The kitchen staff, led by Philly Jinman, like to showcase food and drink from the local area, and the weekly changing restaurant menu reflects their passion for food that is freshly prepared from seasonal ingredients that are home-grown or locally produced wherever possible. With 2 AA rosettes for culinary excellence since 2014, the Inn was also Highly Commended for Best Eating Out in the Visit Herefordshire Awards for Excellence 2016.

The bar menus include favourites such as ham, egg and triple cooked chips, steak sandwiches, burgers (ranging from pork and apple, venison, beef or falafel) as well as toasted sandwiches, salads, homemade soups, and a range of other dishes to suit all tastes and pockets. Succulent steaks are a popular restaurant choice, but the other meat, fish or vegetarian choices on the menu are highly recommended. Starters are varied and well presented, and desserts, which are also available on the bar menu, are really delicious. Favourites include sticky toffee pudding, chocolate brownie and fruit posset. there is a select wine list, and prices are reasonable. The Inn can cater for those with special dietary needs, though it helps to mention what these are when booking.

See the Inn's website for information for opening hours, lunchtime and early evening bar meals and for the evening restaurant menu.
Food is not served here during the evenings on Sunday, Monday or Tuesday.
