Building commenced in 1867, completed in 1868; now 150 years old, this watermill is an outstanding example of Shetland's industrial heritage and is now operated as a VisitScotland 3 star graded visitor attraction and heritage centre, open daily from 10am to 5pm, for 6 months of the year from April through to October. Quendale Water Mill is situated on a working farm and is in an area of outstanding natural beauty.
Complementing the building are various displays of artefacts, tools and machinery formerly used by the local crofting and farming community who produced the grain which was ground by the miller, usually during the winter months, when rainfall was at its peak.
Our small craft shop sells a variety of goods and souvenirs, locally sourced wherever possible. This includes Shetland knitwear, Burra bears, Shetland jewellery, Shetland soap and many more items, all at competitive prices. Tea, coffee and biscuits can also be purchased in the shop.
We provide a free visitor information service and can help you to trace your ancestors (if they were born in the Dunrossness area of Shetland). Visitors making enquiries about their family history should contact us by email in advance of their visit to allow time for research. With WorldHost recognition for excellent customer service we believe we can provide you with the experience you deserve.
