Aberglasney was made famous by the BBC Television series “A Garden Lost in Time” which followed its restoration. Today it is quite simply one of Wales’ finest gardens - a renowned plantsman’s paradise with a unique Elizabethan Cloister Garden at its heart and recently named as one of the RHS' top 10 formal gardens in the UK.
A visit to Aberglasney at any time of year will not disappoint. Explore more than 10 acres of ancient gardens, wonder through walled gardens and woodlands and discover a magnificent collection of plants, many of which are rarely seen elsewhere. The fully restored Elizabethan cloister garden and parapet walk is the only remaining example in the U.K. An extensive archaeological survey carried out on the site in 1999 discovered garden features which date back to the late 16th century. Various older artefacts were also uncovered including a silver Long Cross Penny dating from the reign of Edward I c1282-1289 and a silver half groat dating back to Henry VII c1485-1509.
In 2005 the ‘Ninfarium’ - an indoor garden, was created within the ruinous central rooms and courtyard of the mansion at Aberglasney. The few remaining walls were stabilized and the entire area was covered with a huge glass atrium. This garden now contains a fantastic collection of warm temperate and sub-tropical plants including Orchids, Palms, Magnolias and Cycads. In 2006 the Ninfarium won an award for the best garden design/construction project in the UK.
The gardens and the fully restored ground floor of Aberglasney’s grade II* listed mansion offer a stunning venue for exhibitions and events, full details of which can be found on our website. Complete your visit to these remarkable gardens with a visit to Aberglasney’s picturesque Pool Garden Tearooms. Enjoy a light lunch made using, wherever possible, ingredients from Aberglasney's Kitchen Garden. Take tea on the outdoor terrace for a real trear. Before leaving don’t forget to visit the shop and plant sales area. The Gardens and Tearooms are open every day (except Christmas Day).
