Volunteer Opportunities

The Cardigan Bay Marine Wildlife Centre (CBMWC) was originally established in 1996 as a non-profit organisation dedicated to conserving Cardigan Bay’s marine wildlife through research and education . From the 1st April 2015 the CBMWC became fully integrated into the Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales and we deliver much of the Trusts Living Seas programme of work as well as hosting the Living Seas Marine Team staff and volunteers. Based in a heritage building in the heart of New Quay, overlooking the beautiful beach and harbour, the centre has become the focus for marine research in the area.

Our visitor centre is free to enter and open 7 days a week from April to October. You will find a range of interpretative and interactive displays, including a rock pool aquarium, showcasing the huge variety of marine wildlife found in Cardigan Bay. The exhibits provide information on different themes such as the dolphins, seals and sea birds which can be spotted locally, the geology of the area and important issues surrounding pollution and sustainable fishing. Our Living Seas Volunteers are always on hand to answer any of your questions and tell you all about Cardigan Bay’s Big 3, bottlenose dolphins, harbour porpoise and Atlantic grey seals.

The centre is home to Cardigan Bay Sea Quest an exciting 360 virtual reality experience using the latest Oculus Rift technology. You will be transported beneath the waves into our Cardigan Bay virtual underwater world where your mission is to explore, locate and photograph 20 marine items before your air runs out. Cardigan Bay Sea Quest has been developed as part of our Future Fisheries project and has been funded by the Welsh Governments Nature Fund 2015.

Enjoy a bit of shopping? Our gift shop is bursting with wildlife goodies and local crafts for you to take home as a souvenir. You can even adopt a Welsh bottlenose dolphin! Any profits the shop makes goes back into protecting Cardigan Bay’s marine life.

We work in conjunction with Dolphin Survey Boat Trips, a local boat charter company, to collect data on the bottlenose dolphins of Cardigan Bay and other marine mammals that are regularly spotted, such as harbour porpoise and Atlantic grey seals and more unusual species such as basking sharks and sunfish. If you want to explore Cardigan Bay further then you can book a 2,4 or 8 hour boat trip with Dolphin Survey Boat Trips at our visitor centre.

To further raise awareness about the marine environment, we provide year round education sessions to schools and groups of all ages. We can help you to arrange field visits to the CBMWC with activities organised on the beach and in our dedicated education facility on the ground floor of Patent Slip Building. During school holidays we run a range of marine-themed events such as seashore safaris and magnificent marine mammals which are catered towards families.
