When the BBC brought Historic Royal Palaces Curator and historian, Lucy Worsley to film, she, exclaimed ‘WHAT a stunning place!’ You really do need to see for yourself what all the fuss is over this exceptional attraction in the tiny border town of Presteigne. You can explore the ‘upstairs downstairs’ lives of its Victorian inhabitants, from Judge’s to their servants and felonious guests, all by the flicker of gas and oil lighting throughout and a hands-on policy that allows you to immerse yourself into their world.

You can lie on the beds, read the judge’s books and even pump water in the kitchen. Below stairs there is the full range of servants’ rooms to explore, with kitchens, sleeping quarters and workrooms; a whole gaslit world to discover. The tour is finished by a trip to the vast echoing courtroom, where you are haunted by the echoes of trials long since concluded. You are guided through this Victorian world by an eavesdropping’ audiotour featuring the voice of actor Robert Hardy. You’ll find plenty of things to keep little ones amused whilst you explore the period furnishings, with worksheets, activity chests and their own special guidebook to help them discover and keep them laughing.

Damp cells remind you of the building’s true purpose, along with the vast courtroom where your imagination is captured by the echoing trial of William Morgan, duck thief. Find out about the rural Radnorshire Constabulary, the tragic tale of Mary Morgan, hanged the town in 1805, the terrible state of and great escapes from the gaol, contrasting with the luxurious lives of the judges – what better place to discover for yourselves the true theatre of the law.
