This Aviation Museum is manned by volunteers but houses an outstanding collection of aircraft that you won't find anywhere else, and you can get really close to them. The RAF Harrier GR3 is in mint condition, the Mig-17 is a classic eastern bloc fighter with an afterburner and it could turn on a dime at 9g (the first US aircraft that could out-turn the Mig-17 was the F16). My special interest is jets, so it was great to be able to sit in an 'enemy' cockpit, have a look at a Macchi, A4 Skyhawk, Gloster Meteor and Vampire. Plenty of classics there too - Tiger Moth, DC3 and many ag aircraft. Check the opening hours before making the trip out there, but don't drive past Ashburton without making time for a quick look. It might take longer than you expect.
