The Gibbon Rehabilitation Project, located at the scenic Bang Pae Waterfall in Phuket, is a small sanctuary that rescues gibbons from the illegal pet and tourist industries and releases them back to the wild. The unique project is run by local Thai staff, volunteers and financed entirely by donations.
The poaching of gibbons is a serious threat to this species throughout Thailand, fueled largely by the tourist trade whereby the gibbons are used as photo props and entertainment in bars. GRP teaches these rescued animals normal gibbon behaviours by socializing them with other gibbons and feeding them a natural diet.
GRP is not a petting zoo and interaction with the animals will not be possible for visitors. However, visitors will be able to enjoy watching the gibbons from the viewing area, hearing them sing (especially earlier in the day) and learning more about gibbons and the work GRP does from our volunteers at the Education Centre.
Our Education Centre is open every day of the week for visitors from 9.00am – 4.30pm, except on Thursdays when it is open from 9.00am to 3.00pm.
