In 1862 John McDouall Stuart successfully crossed the continent from south to north. After discovering fresh water Stuart named the area Daly Waters in honour of the governor of SA Sir Dominic Daly. Fresh waters was vital for droving cattle. Daly Waters was the last watering hole before the perilous Murranji Stock route. The Duracks drove their entire herd from Qld to the WA coast. Daly Waters was a landmark stop for them. The telegraph line followed Stuart’s route north, when the task fell behind schedule the pony express was used between Tennant Creek &Daly Waters.
Daly Waters was a major Air Force Base during WW2 for the Australian & American Air Force personnel. The airfield was the first International
Airport in Australia.

Bill Pearce opened a Drover’s Store in1930, which today is known as the Daly Waters Pub.
HOW TO FIND US 600kms south of Darwin, 900kms north of Alice Springs 400 kms north of Tennant Creek. The pub is 3 kms off the Stuart Highway on an all weather sealed road It is not a roadhouse but a pub with a caravan park & accommodation.
