Katherine Outback Experience

Have you ever wondered how a wild horse is tamed so it can be ridden, or how a working dog is trained to round-up cattle?

The 90 minute Katherine Outback Experience show is our core attraction, showcasing and celebrating life in the outback. The show provides a unique window into the inner workings of life on Australian cattle stations through real life 'horse-breaking' and working dog demonstrations, live music performances and humorous bush tales. There is dust and chaos, and things don't always go to plan, but that is part of the beauty of the real Australian outback as we know it.

Front man Tom Curtain has been professionally training horses for over 15 years throughout the Northern Territory. He has also released two nationally acclaimed albums 'Smackbang!' and 'Heatwave' and has had a number of top 10 hits on the Australian Country Music charts. After a break from the industry, Tom is in the process of recording his third album which he is hoping to release in 2017.

In the comfort of shaded seating, guests watch-on as Tom 'breaks-in' and trains a young wild horse using natural horsemanship methods, and often attempting to ride it for the first time. He provides a detailed commentary, explaining the psychology between man and horse. Tom then introduces his team of liberty horses who he has trained to lay down, roll out a swag, pick up his hat and work a cow without a bridle. He performs a number of these tricks whilst playing guitar and singing.

The team of Riverboyne Working Dogs are a crowd favourite, simultaneously working sheep or goats off one word commands from Tom. The dogs also love the attention they receive from guests to the show.

There are also a number of station animals that guests are invited to pat and feed during the show including buffalo, cattle, goats, pigs, chooks and donkeys. At various times throughout the year, we also have gorgeous border collies puppies. Fun for all ages and plenty of opportunities for hands on interactions.

The show is based in Katherine, NT from April to the end of October. From December to late February the show operates in Dunsborough in the south-west of Western Australia. Shows are most afternoons from 4:30pm to 6:00pm. Free refreshments provided. Online bookings, EFTPOS and cash accepted.
