Merit and Spirit were both built for the 1997-98 Volvo Ocean Race, with Merit Cup taking second place and Spirit racing with an all-female crew as EF Education. Each has a rich racing pedigree with several Rolex Sydney Hobart and other major offshore racing achievements. In 1999, Spirit (then Nokia), set a race record of 1 day 19 hours and 48 minutes at an average speed of 14.39 knots. That record stood until Wild Oats XI set the new record or 1 day, 18 hours and 23 minutes in 2012.
