Katnook lies in the heart of the fabled Coonawarra region, South Australia. The first Coonawarra wine was made at ‘Katnook Station’ by regional founder, John Riddoch, in the limestone woolshed back in 1867. That woolshed, along with Riddoch’s office and stables still stand today and were recently restored to become Katnook’s Cellar Door and wedding/function venues.
The second chapter in Katnook’s history began in 1979 when the first wine was made from vineyards replanted a decade earlier – on Riddoch’s original Katnook station site. The wines were made by winemaker Wayne Stehbens, who is still at the winemaking helm, making him one of Australia’s longest serving winemakers.
Katnook has three wines in the prestigious Langton’s Classification of Australian Wines, a five -star rating in James Halliday’s Wine Companion and has twice won Australia’s most coveted trophy, the Jimmy Watson.
All wines are available for tasting at cellar door daily, including the $100 Odyssey and Prodigy. Cheese platters, tea and coffee are also available. The Cellar Door boasts a cosy lounge with a wood fire. At the entrance to Cellar Door lies a terra rossa soil pit, allowing visitors to see first hand the soil profile that has made Coonawarra famous.
